Will the treatment be painful?
We will take every measure to ensure that your procedure is in no way uncomfortable or painful. If treatment is needed, we will inject a small amount of anesthesia to gently numb a concentrated area of your mouth. For most patients, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours.
Will there be any pain after the procedure?
Some discomfort is to be expected after your root treatment. It is usually to biting and chewing and will subside over 5-7 days after and improving as each day goes by. We normally recommend such analgesics as Paracetomol or Ibuprofen and these are available without prescription.
Will I need to return to your office for follow-ups after the procedure is finished?
Yes, for most root canal treatments, we recommend that patients return to the Centre 6 months after the procedure was finished and then annually over the next 3 years. There is no charge for this and the visit should be considered as continuing care after the root treatment procedure to assess and monitor healing. We will usually schedule appointments at the time of the visit for your next recall.
Will I need to see my Dentist after the root treatment?
We usually leave the root treated tooth with a strong temporary filling and suggest you return to your dentist as soon as possible after the procedure for a permanent restoration which in many instances will involve a crown. We will liaise closely with your dentist as to the best way to restore your tooth and the timing for this.
I am very nervous about treatment. Can you offer a sedation service?
We have a dedicated team of dental anaesthetists who can offer a sedation service to nervous patients and those who find the treatment difficult to cope with. The anaesthetist will render a separate fee for this service and you should deal directly with him or her regarding settlement. The anaesthetist will also provide you with details related to sedation both before and after the procedure. Please be advised that no sedation will be given unless you have someone to accompany you home after the procedure.
